Dear Students,

I hope you all had a lovely break and did get some rest.

I just wanted you to know that, I welcome you all back on campus and looking forward to seeing you again. Remember, I am here to help and support you where ever possible or signpost to the right person/s.

There is a new module I am  supper excited about and I know some of you will too. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you:

"Black Studies Module: Joy, Resistance and Creativity in the Capital, is unlike any other module taught at London Met. Learn about the ways African and Caribbean communities resisted, found joy and carved our culture in London, through a weekly guest speakers boasting credentials from Netflix through to GQ. Available to level 5 students in SSSP .

Interested in culture, arts, music and social history and being taught by some of the leading names in journalism, producing, activism, publishing, parliament, and more? Keep reading…

You’re invited to sign up to the first ever run of the Black Studies module Joy, Resistance and Creativity in the Capital. This module is unlike any other module taught at London Met, each week you’ll get to learn from and network with people who boast credentials from Netflix through to GQ. You will delve into contemporary cultural production, creativity, resistance and joy in first, second and third generation African and Caribbean communities in London. From documenting the evolution of sound system culture, to exploring visual and written creative expressions, students will unpack the socio-political contexts that shaped the lives and sub-cultures studied.

This module will embrace the joys of Blackness that are often undocumented and under narrated which include topics such as:

Music - exploring grime, garage, jungle…
Archiving our and telling our histories
Community organising
Black and Gay back in the day
BMX culture
And loads more
Students will undertake creative assessments, where you get to choose out of a number of creative briefs to respond to class questions. You can make a TikTok, do some street photography, write a poem or even make music! You’ll also have the opportunity to take home brand new books from our invited authors and publishers that we’ll be working with."


Some key information:

  •  Module name - Resistance, Joy and Creativity in the Capital
  • Available to level 5 students in SSSP (Only some courses can take this, but students can email to find out if they can)
  • February 2nd 2022 start (13 weeks)
  • Pilot run, so available to select courses only in SSSP: Education, Community Development and Leadership, Youth, Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Psychology
  • Level 5 students only
