Speak to your Course Leader and become a Student Rep today!

Whether you have just joined us at London Met, or you are a returning student looking to get involved – then being a Student Rep could be a fantastic opportunity for you!

Being a Student Rep with LMSU is the first step to truly taking control of your educational experience. The role of the Student Reps is to ensure that their course delivers the high-quality of education that you should expect to receive at London Met. This is achieved by seeking feedback from other students on your course and raising their views and concerns to your course leader and school. This is called ‘Student Voice’ and is all about representing your fellow students and ensuring that their opinions and perspectives are considered when decisions are made. The role lasts for the remainder of the academic year, but if you are on a several-year course you can reapply every year.

As a Student Rep you gain excellent experience to help you develop your skills and enhance your CV. Our Student Rep accreditation scheme helps you to stand out when applying for jobs after completing your degree. Previous Student Reps have said that the role has improve their confidence, public speaking, stakeholder management, negotiation, and teamwork skills – qualities that employers are desperate to attract! Most of our team of elected full-time and part-time SU officers start their journey as Student Reps as it provides a great introduction to leadership and making change as a student.

Being a Student Rep opens up a world of new opportunities. It is a brilliant way to meet new people, make friends, and get to know those on your course and in your school better. At LMSU we also organise social events and activities for our Student Reps and other volunteers to provide a strong social and community network for you. It gives you a chance to get involved with other aspects of LMSU’s work, including standing for one of the seats reserved for Student Reps on Student Council, which is the democratic decision-making body of the SU where members propose and vote on policies, and hold the SU’s officers to account.

As this is a voluntary role the commitment we expect from Student Reps is as reasonable as possible. Each semester there are two important meetings to attend – your Course Committee Meeting (CCM), and your School-wide meeting. We provide a compact but comprehensive training package to equip you with all the knowledge and understanding you need to complete your role successfully. These are always accompanied with food where possible!

If you are interested in becoming a Student Rep, speak to your course leader or send them an email expressing your interest, and they will explain the selection process to you. If you have any further questions about being a Student Rep, please email Ben Thomas (LMSU Representation and Democracy Coordinator) at tsbthom1@londonmet.ac.uk.

Best of luck!
